PCO-Syndrom (polycystic ovary syndrome)
PCO syndrome is the most common hormonal disorder in women of childbearing age. In Europe it affects around 5-10% of all women. PCO syndrome is also the most common hormone-related cause of female infertility.
Symptoms and diagnosis
Irregular menstrual cycles are common; sometimes there is no menstrual bleeding at all. The diagnosis is made by ultrasound examination, and/or by standard hormone testing.
Recent research studies have shown that PCO syndrome is often related to metabolic disorders, particularly if the patient is also overweight.
Treatment of PCO syndrome
On the basis of these research findings new treatment strategies have been developed in recent years that often lead to successful conception by natural means, with only minor hormonal treatment or with the help of an operation.
